Acne in April

Updated: Apr 5, 2022

As the weather warms up, you may find yourself noticing a few pimples, or even a full-blown breakout. There's good reason your face, chest, or back may be flaring up. The warmer weather and increase in humidity can, of course, make you sweat, but also increases oil production. Both sweat and oil can clog pores, resulting in those pesky pimples.

Another reason the shining sun can cause breakouts is one you might not have even thought of. With Easter being spring's big holiday, the shelves are stocked with goodies like pastel-colored cakes, rabbit-shaped cookies, candy, and chocolates. These can be hard to resist, especially if you've been waiting all year for a Cadbury egg. So what does this have to do with your skin?

Any foods with added sugars, processed sugars, or even (yikes!) artificial sweeteners will affect your skin. Overdoing the sweets can lead to a decrease in collagen and elastin production, which results in premature aging, fine lines, and dull, saggy skin. But, dairy and sugar both increase inflammation and sebum, which result in acne breakouts. Moreover, the two offenders can disrupt the hormone system, again, leading to breakouts. There is an exception to this, however, and that's dark chocolate. Indulge in organic, pure dark chocolate for its high antioxidants, which fight free radicals that might be harming your skin.

Treat your acne from the inside out with this Acne-Busting Smoothie:

One cup of coconut water (unsweetened)

One cup of kale

1/4 cup of fresh mint leaves

the juice of one lime

one peeled cucumber

one teaspoon of ground chia seeds

(optional: you can also add a scoop of your favorite protein powder)

Blend all ingredients and enjoy!
